Spring Lake’s Heritage Festival Week, June 10-15, is the perfect time to celebrate the artistic genius of Winsor McCay. McCay grew up in Spring Lake during the latter half of the 1800s and is remembered today as the father of animation. The man who inspired Walt Disney, Walter Lantz and countless other animators began his artistic career as a student at Union School in Spring Lake with his famous chalkboard drawing “The Sinking of the Alpena.”  The library will host two McCay-themed programs on Thursday, June 13.

10:30 am McCay Storytime for the preschool set with children’s book author, illustrator and ArtPrize winner Aaron Zenz.

2:00 pm Draw Like McCay Cartooning Workshop with author, illustrator and comic strip creator Kevin Collier. Girls and boys in 3rd grade and up will learn cartooning techniques and animation basics during this hands-on session.
